A Realtor’s First Step in Building Wealth

If you’re like me, you got into this business not just to make money and help people, but to build wealth.

But how do you that? There’s no Order of Operations for Realtors interested in building wealth!

In 2024, I wrote a 10-Step CE class for Realtors interested in building wealth. Step “0” is actually the most important step of all, and I’d like to share that with you here:

What Is Your “Enough” Number?

The first step to building wealth is figuring out what your “enough” number is. This is the amount of passive income and assets that will cover your comfortable lifestyle for the rest of your life. In other words, it’s the point at which you’ve achieved financial security, and you no longer need to worry about running out of money.

Without this clarity, you’ll find yourself constantly chasing after more—more clients, more deals, more income, more things—and you’ll never feel satisfied. The default mindset becomes one of scarcity (what we call a ‘scarcity mindset’), where you tell yourself, “I don’t have enough.” This kind of thinking can be incredibly dangerous for your business decisions, your finances, and your personal consumption patterns.

The Problem with the “More” Mindset

When you don’t know what your enough number is, the natural tendency is to want more. This scarcity mindset is rooted in the belief that what you have now isn’t sufficient. This mindset can cloud your judgment and lead you to make poor financial decisions.

Take it from me: I’ve made mistakes in my career because I didn’t know when to stop. I bought things I didn’t need or took on projects that didn’t align with my long-term goals—all because I wasn’t clear on my “enough” number. I thought I needed more to feel secure or successful. But in reality, all that did was highjack my focus on my goals and cause me to buy and do things I didn’t need.

Breaking Free from the Sales Loop

So, how do you break free from this cycle of never having enough? Start by determining your enough number. It’s a personal process, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your enough number should reflect your lifestyle needs, your financial goals, and the level of passive income that will allow you to stop worrying about money.

When you know your enough number, you stop measuring your success against an endless climb – or worse! – the perceived success of those around you. Instead, you make more mindful decisions about how you want to run your business, how you want to grow your wealth, how you decide what things to buy, and how you want to spend your time. You’ll be able to make business decisions from a place of abundance, not fear or ego.

Why It Matters

Having a clear understanding of what your “enough” number is allows you to move forward with confidence. Instead of being stuck in a loop of consumption and financial worry, you can focus on building wealth strategically. With the end in mind, you’ll know when to take risks and when to slow down. More importantly, you’ll find peace knowing that you’ve reached the point where you can comfortably support the lifestyle you desire.

The Outcome

By taking the time to determine your enough number, you set yourself up for financial freedom and peace of mind. It’s the foundation for building wealth in a healthy, sustainable way—without being driven by scarcity or ego.

If you’re ready to break free from the cycle of “more” and focus on what truly matters for your financial future, I encourage you to start this journey today. Reach out if you want to chat more about how to define your enough number and what steps you can take to make it a reality.
